The venerable Ghawth, Khwaja Muhammad Nazim •highlighted the teachings of Mawlana 'Abd Allah al-Faiz ad-Daghestani regarding money lending, "Perhaps this may seem as strange to you, Nazim Efendi, as it does to them, that , while admitting that Allah orders us to lend money, I forbid my followers to do so. Yes, it is as it seems: Allah Almighty orders and I prevent. But perhaps this will no longer seems strange to you once I mention and discuss the conditions that must be fulfilled before one may consider a loan (to) be a 'goodly loan', the kind of loan by which one may attain nearness to one's Lord. You will see that this entails much more then just lending without interest. If a person comes to you asking for a loan of a considerable amount of money...you must turn inward and consult with yourself, saying: "That fellow has come and asked for a loan. Are you ready to grant it to him? Also are you prepared to lose that money without its causing a change of heart in you toward that fellow? Are you ready to remain a steadfast friend to him even in case you never see the money again, either because he simply cannot pay you back to to his continual poverty or because he won't, though he is well able to? Even if he plays you for a fool, will you still be his friend as you are now'?" If you can honestly answer: 'Yes, he is my brother, and these (amount)...could never come between him and me to make us enemies. No matter what happens with the money I will never feel differently about him, neither openly nor in the recesses of my heart.' In that case give him the loan. But if your answer is: 'No, if he doesn't bring it back I will go to court,' or even if it is: 'If he really can't pay me back I will be patient, but if he cheats me I will sue him in court, 'then don't give."
